Philippine Agriculture Secretary visits IRRI to explore opportunities for boosting rice sector

A worker looks up at the latest batch of imported Vietnamese rice being unloaded at a port in Manila August 18, 2014. The Southeast Asian country, one of the world's biggest rice buyers, expects to miss government targets for rice production this year, boosting chances it could buy more of the grain overseas to maintain supplies and curb local retail prices. Grain suppliers such as Vietnam and Thailand are looking for signs that the Philippines may need to import more rice, with total shipments this year potentially exceeding 2 million tonnes, the biggest in four years.
