The Indian State of Punjab issued a prohibition on the sale, stocking, distribution, and use of Acephate, Triazophos, Thiamethoxam, Carbendazim, Tricyclazole, Buprofezin, Carbofuron, Propiconazole and Thiophinate Methyl with immediate effect.
The ban was made to reduce the risk of higher pesticide residues in the rice grains from the use of these insecticides which results in lower quality of the rice or unfit for human consumption.
In 2019, European nations rejected several containers of rice from Punjab for containing excessive residual pesticide levels.
