Water scarcity forces Vietnamese rice farmers to plant corn

Vietnamese rice farmers Tien Giang Province the Mekong Delta have planted corn on almost 2,000 hectares of drought-prone and saltwater-affected rice fields for the 2018-19 winter-spring crop as a result of water scarcity.

The shift to corn turned out to be more profitable for the farmers who earned USD 2,400 per hectare for the winter-spring crop. This is more than three times higher than the profit from rice, according to the province’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.
