The Philippine Rice Research Institute advised farmers to watch out for rice viral diseases including tungro, rice dwarf, grassy stunt, and ragged stunt.
The agency said these viral diseases can cause significant losses. However, the diseases can be prevented by practicing a fallow period of at least one month between each crop to reduce the food supply and the population of pests that spread the virus.
Resistant varieties should also be considered but insecticide should only be applied when needed.
