US reports first significant apple snail infestation in rice

The Louisiana State University reported the first case of significant damage in rice caused by golden snails in North America. The invasive snail species from South America destroyed a 20-hectare field of rice.

Apple golden apple snails spread to the U.S. through the freshwater aquarium trade where they are sold as small algae eaters for fish tanks.

Previously, the damage caused by the pests has been limited to disrupting crawfish production.
