Due to a shortage of agricultural labor, many rice farmers in the Indian state of Punjab are shifting from traditional transplanted rice to direct-seeded rice (DSR).
However, dry weather conditions in the Malwa Belt have contributed to increasing pest rodent damage during the germination stage in DSR fields.
Experts from Punjab Agriculture University issued a rodent control advisory and launched a campaign to kill rats in many vulnerable villages of the district.
