Nigerian farmers urged to increase production to reduce food imports

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari advised farmers to increase their food production to lessen the country’s dependence on food importation.

The country has been aiming to be food self-sufficient produce a lot of the food it consumes but its agriculture sector remains largely artisanal with many of the farmers relying on rainwater for irrigation.

The government has put in place several mechanisms to assist farmers with resources, farm inputs, seedlings, and other materials. The government’s Anchor Borrowers Programme is largely responsible for Nigeria’s massive increase in local rice production.
