Philippines to maximize irrigation for the next rice planting season

The Philippine Department of Agriculture is working with the National Irrigation Administration to maximize irrigated land for the next rice planting season to ensure a larger harvest.

The country’s irrigated rice farms produce an average of 4.4 metric tons of milled rice per hectare while its rain-fed land only yields 3.1 metric tons per hectare.

The recommendation was approved by the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases as the government pursues the optimum level of rice production through irrigation as well as farm inputs like quality seed and fertilizer for early planting.
