Transgenic rice developed as potential hypertension cure

Researchers at the Chinese Academy of Sciences have developed transgenic rice that contains a gene that enables it to produce high levels of an amino acid that inhibits the enzyme that can cause hypertension.

In laboratory tests, rats given peptides from the transgenic rice showed a significant decline in blood pressure after two hours. Rats fed with flour from the transgenic rice over five weeks also exhibited a drop in blood pressure with no apparent side effects.

If it also works in humans, an adult would need to consume about half a tablespoon of the rice daily to treat and prevent hypertension, according to the researchers.
