Contract farming could help improve livelihood of Myanmar’s small-scale farmers

Contract farming can be an effective tool in developing the agriculture sector in the country by providing small-scale farmers access to capital and technology, said Hla Kyaw, Myanmar’s deputy minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation. He called on relevant government agencies and agriculture experts to create regulatory guidelines to make contract farming more effective in improving the livelihoods of the local farmers.

A plan to develop a framework on contract terms, pricing, quality standards, and arbitration procedures, among others for rice, corn, sugarcane, other crops as well as dairy production is already in the works, according to Ye Min Aung, general manager of Myanmar Rice Federation.
